Who We Are

Porchlight strives to decrease the Dane County homeless population by providing shelter, housing, supportive services, and a sense of community in ways that empower residents and program participants to positively shape their lives.

What We Do

Porchlight began over 25 years ago, when concerned members of Madison's faith communities opened a temporary shelter. At this time, the City of Madison's official stance on homelessness was that there was none. In the first year, over 200 men utilized the temporary shelter, and the next year over 500 men had accessed the shelter. Clearly, there was a need for shelter as well as permanent, affordable housing. Porchlight now provides affordable housing at 23 locations, where over 420 residents work with Porchlight staff to address the root causes of homelessness, such as access to education, secure employment and mental health services Porchlight provides emergency shelter, low-cost transitional and permanent housing, and supportive services to the homeless and low-income population of Dane County. Programs include the Men's Drop-In Shelter, Safe Haven for homeless men and women with mental illness and the permanent and transitional housing program, which provides 330 units of housing at scattered sites located throughout Madison and Dane County.
