Assist students in Introductory Programming with individual projects and general computer literacy. Tutoring would take place in a classroom setting with instructor present. Time slots available 8:15-9:15 am Tuesday-Friday. 

Assist High School Art Teacher with materials management and art students with exploring and deepening their creative talents. Help with brainstorming ideas, share your experience with technical aspects of various media. Opportunities in both 2-D and 3-D art , plus photography in Spring 2020 semester.  School day hours--contact teacher for schedule specifics.  Note: All volunteers working directly with MMSD students must give consent to a basic background check, the results of which may impact eligibility for placement.

East High School offers on-line language study programs in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Korean, and Japanese. Students are highly motivated young people with an interest in independent work, and at least 3 year's successful study of another foreign language. Learning will be facilitated by professional instructors, but additional conversation partners and tutors are also needed. Volunteers may work with students in individual or small group settings.

Arabic, Mandarin Chinese or Japanese speakers, both native and non-native. Volunteers would work with beginning/intermediate high school students as tutors and conversation partners, practicing simple conversations in the target language and/or conducting more advanced cultural conversations in English.

9:10 am and 1:45 pm Tuesday through Friday, 2018-2019

RESTRICTIONS: Native experience or intermediate/advanced study in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, or Japanese. School District policy requires that all volunteers working directly with students complete a form authorizing a basic background check, the results of which will determine eligibility for placement.

Assist with weekly academic catch-up program for ninth graders. This position is equal parts logistical assistance and tutoring, requiring clear communication skills and the ability to meet and escort students throughout the building as they received targeted and early intervention for any academic challenges encountered during the course of the current week. Fridays, during the school day.

Volunteers would work with advanced high school French or Spanish students as tutors and conversation partners. Hours are flexible and volunteers can work as many hours as desired. See primary school contact for fall schedule information.

RESTRICTIONS: Tutors should be native or experienced speakers of French or Spanish, including fluency in reading and writing the target language. All volunteers who work directly with students must pass a basic background check conducted by the Madison Metropolitan School District

Assist with afterschool homework as a tutor--high school subjects. Afterschool clubs also need recreation directors--assist with performance, cooking, sporting, and other clubs that students have already created, or propose a new one based on your own interest and expertise.

RESTRICTIONS: All volunteers working directly with students are subject to basic background checks conducted by the Madison Metropolitan School District, the results of which may affect eligibility for placement. Participants in recreational clubs may be required to sign additional liability waivers due to physical activity involved.

9th and 10th grade math & science students at East High School are involved in small-group investigations on an almost daily basis. Staff and volunteer assistants in the classroom are instrumental in helping students to focus their inquiries and to discover general principles of beginning algebra, geometry,introductory biology, and general chemistry. Individual attention has proven to be critical for many students as they manipulate materials and acquire and refine their understandings.

A volunteer may circulate between  groups of 3-4 students, or may develop an ongoing relationship with a single group. Volunteers ask leading questions and help students to clarify their thoughts, rather than teach new material. One-to-one tutoring/mentoring opportunities also become available from time to time.

RESTRICTIONS: Volunteers must authorize the school district to perform a basic background check. Training is available "on-the-job" from the classroom teacher, with additional resources, such as texts and videotapes available upon request.

Help special needs students in their interaction with simple text for employment and daily living. Duties will include listening and reading to students.
