Volunteer: Mathematics/Science Classroom Assistant

9th and 10th grade math & science students at East High School are involved in small-group investigations on an almost daily basis. Staff and volunteer assistants in the classroom are instrumental in helping students to focus their inquiries and to discover general principles of beginning algebra, geometry, introductory biology, and general chemistry. Individual attention has proven to be critical for many students as they manipulate materials and acquire and refine their understandings.

A volunteer may circulate between  groups of 3-4 students, or may develop an ongoing relationship with a single group. Volunteers ask leading questions and help students to clarify their thoughts, rather than teach new material. One-to-one tutoring/mentoring opportunities also become available from time to time.

RESTRICTIONS: Volunteers must authorize the school district to perform a basic background check. Training is available "on-the-job" from the classroom teacher, with additional resources, such as texts and videotapes available upon request.
