Disaster Shelter Worker

Help provide clients with comfort and safety after disasters by supporting
the day-to-day activities within a shelter. This may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information, or other areas within a shelter.

Responsibilities (vary depending on assignment)

Provide excellent customer service to clientsComplete the required virtual self-paced training (3.5 hours of training total)

Time Commitment

Local/Regional: Shift work determined by the scale of the relief operation; a minimum requirement of 8-12 hours per day during the disaster relief operation for multiple, consecutive days Beyond region: Minimum of 14 days working 8- or 12-hour shifts

Volunteer Medical Screener - Dane County

Medical Screener volunteers join the blood collections staff to ensure timely processing of donors at blood drives. Medical Screeners collect and confirm donor demographics and health histories, determine procedure eligibility, and conduct physical exams (oral temperature, pulse, blood pressure). This position provides you with the opportunity to validate your training and skills at a nationally recognized organization while providing service to your community. 

Responsibilities:

Screen and examine blood donor candidates to approve or defer for health concerns.

Collection and confirm donor demographics, determine procedure eligibility.

Conduct physical exam to include oral temperature, pulse, BP and hematocrit according to procedure.

Facilitate and evaluate self-administered health history.

Comply with applicable Federal, state, and local regulations as well as all American Red Cross policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Time Commitment: minimum of two shifts per month after training commitment.

Training: Orientation to the Red Cross, virtual, classroom and on the job instruction. All training provided free of charge. 

Training will be 40 hours per week for 4 consecutive weeks through a combination of both virtual and in-person training. Please ensure your schedule can accommodate 4 consecutive weeks of training.

Qualifications: No medical background necessary. 

Willingness to support Red Cross mission. Customer service experience, effective verbal communication and public relations skills are required. Disaster Client Caseworker

Supporting the recovery of disaster affected individuals, households, and communities by providing referrals, advocacy, and financial assistance through RC Care (case management system).

Responsibilities 

Conduct Intake by interviewing the client and opening a case in RC Care Provide Financial Assistance to qualified clients Conduct Follow-up and Recovery Planning Services Provide Internal Referrals Provide Community Referrals Assist with problem-solving and advocacy on request Use RC Care to document services according to the Client Care Program Standards and Procedures Complete the required virtual self-paced training (9 hours of training total)

Disaster Shelter Resident Caseworker

Work with shelter residents to understand their resources and transition roadblocks to help households create an individualized action plan so that they can transition from the shelter to a more sustainable living solution.

Responsibilities

Disaster Spiritual Care Volunteer

The role of the Disaster Spiritual Care (DSC) volunteer is to serve as a member of a temporary work unit on a disaster relief operation to provide disaster spiritual care support to individuals and families who have been impacted by a disaster.

Assist disaster clients to utilize their own spiritual resources, values and faith in the midst of crisis, regardless of one's faith tradition. Assist in developing partnerships with local faith-based organizations. Facilitate long-term recovery for clients by providing spiritual and emotional support, and connection to local resources. Be available for staff who request spiritual care support.

Qualifications:

Required:

Meets one of the following criteria: A disaster spiritual care provider in good standing in a National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) member organization A Board-certified chaplain A professional chaplain (paid or volunteer) and is endorsed by that organization An endorsed leader of a local faith community or organization Has successfully completed the DSC Screening evaluation conducted by a DSC Regional Program Lead or DSC Division Advisor for new DSC Volunteers. Good organization skills, responsible and punctual. Demonstrated active listening skills. Demonstrated ability to implement Standards and Procedures and follow associated job tools including reporting requirements. Demonstrated ability to interact with community members in a clear, compassionate manner. Demonstrated ability to involve appropriate others in managing problems and conflict. Disaster Client Health Services Volunteer

This position supports the Regional Disaster Cycle Services department. Disaster Health Services volunteers work in person before, during and/or after a disaster event (hurricane/wildfire/tornado/flood). Volunteers in this role provide assistance and healthcare to shelter residents as needed.

Responsibilities 

Provide hands on care for shelter clients to include but not limited to assistance with activities of daily living, wound care, incontinence care, assistance with functional needs. Provide health education, health assessments and determination if a higher level of care is needed. Assist clients to replace medications, durable medical equipment or consumable medical supplies. Advocate for client needs with Disaster Health Services supervisor. Support maternal and child needs as necessary. Complete required virtual self-paced and instructor-led training required for the position (9 hours total).

Time Commitment

Locally – Monthly shift calendar available to support local disaster responses. All volunteers are encouraged to sign up for a minimum of one shift per month.

Nationally – Minimum 2 week commitment working 10- or 12-hour shifts.

Home Fire Campaign Team Member Responsibilities

Assist community members to prepare for home fires and other disasters.

This position is responsible for the tasks involved to implement the preparedness program including:

• Support the annual preparedness goals, RDO objectives, and regional plan for preparedness programming through participation in meetings, projects, and local preparedness activities

• Execute assigned projects and local preparedness activities according to the activities you are trained in: Home Fire Campaign

• Serve clients and/or support Red Cross team members in providing residents with free smoke alarm installations and fire safety education

• Complete tasks such as implementing preparedness activities, meeting with partners to build relationships, conducting inventory, and procuring or receiving necessary preparedness supplies

Time Commitment

• 5-10 hours per weekend, twice a quarter on average

• Home Fire Preparedness Campaign Events are located throughout the state of WI within assigned neighborhoods

Qualifications

• Ability to relate effectively with diverse groups and individuals

• Excellent interpersonal, and verbal communication skills

• Demonstrated ability to read, understand, and review program guidelines and tools

Disaster Client Mental Health Services Volunteer

Red Cross Disaster Mental Health volunteer teams are active throughout the United States, meeting the emotional and psycho-social needs of disaster survivors and fellow Red Cross disaster workers. These teams respond to disasters of all sizes, from single family fires to large-scale events. 

What does the Red Cross do & what do we need?
The Red Cross provides shelter, feeding, emergency supplies, health and mental support to hundreds of thousands of people affected by disasters of all sizes. We are actively recruiting new Disaster Mental health team members to provide support within your local community. 

What does a Disaster Mental Health team do?
1. Respond to the immediate emotional distress and psycho-social needs of disaster survivors and Red Cross disaster responders
2. Supplement local mental health resources during times of disasters
3. Support the community in building resilience

Eligibility:
1. Currently licensed mental health professionals:
- At minimum, holds a Master's Degree in one of the mental health positions listed below; and
- Holds a current, unencumbered license from, or is registered with, any US state or territory as a social worker, psychologist, professional counselor, marriage or family therapist, or psychiatrist (any level license/registration, including non-clinical licenses such as Licensed Masters Social Worker or LMSW)
2. Current school psychologists and school counselors:
- At minimum, holds a Master's Degree in school psychology or school counseling; and
- Holds a current, unexpired license or certification as a school psychologist or school counselor issued by a state board of education
3. Current psychiatric nurses:
- Have a state license as a registered nurse; and
- Have a minimum of 2 years' experience working in a psychiatric setting, verified by a letter from a current or previous employer

Time Commitment: Locally – Monthly shift calendar available to support local disaster responses. All volunteers are encouraged to sign up for a minimum of one shift per month. Nationally – Minimum 2 week
commitment working 10- or 12-hour shifts.
