Volunteer: Help Write About Actual or Wanted Transit in the Madison Area

You can write about transit in Madison in various ways. Maybe you ride the bus. Maybe you do not. You can explain why, why not or something else. Do you walk, bike and/or drive a car? Why or why not? You can write about actual or anticipated experiences. Does weather matter? Does time of year matter? What is your ideal way  to get around? You could write a nonproprietary column or blog for our website (www.busadvocates.org/blog.html). Or you could pitch an opinion or article somewhere else. Letters to the Editor, columns, blogs and articles are all important. Write your own composition or help draft one with others.

Your work could help fulfill a classroom assignment or a requirement for community service.

Volunteer: Child Care Volunteer

We are now accepting new volunteers for this position for the summer of 2025! Childcare needed during English classes Monday and Wednesday 11-12:30.

Give young children a safe, fun place to grow and learn while their parents attend adult education classes or events! Hang out in our child care room to play games, read stories, and do art activities with a small group of children ages 3 to 12. Childcare is on an as needed basis, and every 2nd Saturday of the month for the FUNNE program 9:30-11:30am.

Volunteers will work in the child care room, where we have a variety of books, games, and toys. Volunteers should enjoy spending time with children, especially younger children, and be able to keep kids engaged with various activities. Typically one to five children come to morning child care. Some children may speak a limited amount of English, but as long as you know how to have fun you need not speak any other language!

Volunteer: Fundraising/Event planning

Join our fundraising team to work on fundraising strategies and help plan events. Whether you have experience in fundraising or just want to help our chapter raise funds, we have opportunities for you. There are many skills and interests that can be involved in planning, outreach, and event planning or other skills that are part of putting together events that can be useful. Events are sometimes online as well as in person, and meetings are online. We have a general template that has worked well for us, but we are always open to new ideas and how to improve our efforts. Fundraising is a key element of helping our chapter succeed.

Volunteer: Recycling Away from Home (RAH) at Festivals

Tired of trash and waste and want to help us do better? Our Four Lakes Sierra Club Recycling Away from Home (RAH) program is working to create a community culture of less waste. We're at several east side Madison festivals where we help with the trash and recycling to limit landfill trash and maximize recycling, which are also opportunities to bring more attention to our trashy habits. You also get to enjoy fun festivals with the great music, vendors, food and drink. And you'll receive a genuine Four Lakes t-shirt for volunteering.

This summer, we'll be at Atwoodfest on July 26 & 27, and Africafest on August 16. We'd love to have you join us, so please contact us to get involved.

We also have a longer term goal to enact stronger community standards and reduce waste, and we hope to hold some more discussions with the City of Madison to figure out how to reduce use of wasteful items. If you're interested reducing waste or have ideas of your own to share, we'd love to hear from you.

Pantry hours are a more social atmosphere with lots of personal interaction. You will be coordinating pantry duties with other volunteers. Volunteers that have transportation and don’t mind driving may help with retrieving items for the pantry from other community resource locations, but is not a necessity.

Tasks

Tasks may include the following:

Overseeing pantry operations on Mondays and Fridays from 1-3pm.
Stocking the pantry shelves inside SJC as well as our free pantry, outside the building. Assisting community members in the pantry area to secure food and essential items they are in need of. Keeping the pantry area clean and organized. Record any items that we are in need of.Record distributions.

Skills

Ability to communicate with SJC staff, other volunteers and community members. Able to lift light to moderately heavy objects. Stock pantry inside SJC and the Willy Street Pantry on Few Street Organizational skills Self-motivated to work productively without intense supervision Navigate Madison in order to retrieve donated items from various agencies

Setting

The main pantry is located on the lower level of the Social Justice Center. This is where the majority of the inventory of food and essential items are located. Items will be received, sorted and organized here. The Willy Street Pantry is outside on the Few Street terrace. There are wagons and dollies available to assist in moving the products to the desired location.

Schedule

Pantry hours are 1-3pm on Mondays and Fridays. It is crucial for our lead pantry volunteer to be present during these shifts.

Training and supervision

New volunteers will attend a 1-2 hour orientation and shadow staff or another volunteer a few shifts, depending on the new volunteer’s comfort level. We will work with volunteers to ensure their understanding of the tasks at hand and location of needed supplies. If needed we are happy to train volunteers on how to use Discord (a chat application) but this is not a technology intensive role.

Screening

We will do an informal interview to make sure all parties think it’s a good fit. If you are interested in volunteering as part of an outside/third-party program, such as earning hours for credit or fulfilling a community service requirement, prospective volunteers should bring this up during the informal interview or before beginning volunteer hours. We’re more than happy to have volunteers join our team who are participating in these kinds of programs as long as we have the following:

Volunteer: Friends Book Store Clerk

Are you looking for an opportunity to get downtown to the library, meet other book lovers, serve the community, and help raise money for even better library services and programs? If this opportunity fits your needs or interests, the Friends of the Madison Public Library (FMPL) invite you to volunteer as a sales clerk in the Friends Book Store. The Friends Book Store is located on the first floor of the Central Library and sells donated books and other materials to raise money for enhanced library services and programs for the entire Madison community. The store can only be open when volunteers are available, so if you can help, your assistance would be welcome and valued.

Volunteers sales clerks, serving one, two, or three hour shifts on a weekly or regular basis are the key to the success of the store. This opportunity might be ideal for a retired person or someone who works from home or in a part-time job to get out to meet new people and serve the community in a low-key, low stress job. It would also be a great opportunity to get experience serving the public, providing good customer service, and gaining work skills.

PREFERENCES: Ideally a book store clerk would have some experience serving the public, interacting successfully with customers, handling money, making change, operating a cash register, and working without direct supervision. But interest, enthusiasm, reliability, love of books and the library, willingness and ability to learn, and ability to work independently are the basic requirements. Volunteer sales clerks must be able to get to the downtown library to work and will be asked to establish a regular schedule. A supervisor will be available to provide training, to set up work schedules and answer questions.

Volunteer: Wisdom Prairie Workday - Outdoor Nature Volunteering

Volunteers are essential partners in our environmental stewardship. Consider joining us for a volunteer workday in the restored prairies, savannas and woodlands at Holy Wisdom Monastery to sustain your spirit and the land. Activities shift seasonally, with common projects including invasive species removal and seed collecting.   2024 Dates: Wisdom Prairie Workdays are every Wednesday throughout the year from 9:00-11:30 am. Meet at the kiosk at the top of the monastery building parking lot and come for as long as you can.   Time: 9:00 am - 11:30 am   Location: We meet at the kiosk at the top of the monastery's hill. GPS Coordinates: 43°07'18.9"N 89°27'05.9"W   Please register by emailing Amy Alstad, aalstad@holywisdommonastery.org.     What if none of the volunteer opportunities align with my schedule?   Consider coming for a walk on the trails whenever your availability permits. We could always use your help monitoring trail conditions!   Goals for our trail monitoring program include:
· Early detection of trail issues
· Collecting data on number of trail users
· Diversifying opportunities for volunteers   Protocol for trail monitoring is simple:
Walk a section – or two or all – of the Holy Wisdom trails and report what you encounter using a simple online form. For now, this is a purely a monitoring program. In other words, no need to engage with trail users e.g. about dogs or other infractions. Access the reporting form for trail monitoring

Location:

Since newcomers live all around Madison, you may not be able to count on being paired with someone who lives within walking distance of your residence. When refugees first arrive most of them do not have a car or driver’s license.

Supervision:

The Aljirani Madison volunteer will provide basic weekly reports on meetings and have periodic check ins with the program coordinator to receive support and guidance.
