We are Women United! Our local network of more than 1,200 members provides community-wide personal and professional development opportunities, and collectively invests in and advocates for programs that support financial security for all Dane County women. Help us reach more women and their families to help them succeed in work and life.

Council Position

As the governing body of Women United, council members create and implement community-wide member engagement strategies focused on women’s personal and professional development, and advocate for programs that provide financial security for women in Dane County. New council members are onboarded on a quarterly basis.

Responsibilities, time commitment: in collaboration with United Way support staff,

  • Recruit council and committee members reflective of Women United membership and Dane County women
  • Set annual goals for DEI, engagement and philanthropy
  • Grow and retain Women United Membership
  • Nominate and identify a Women in Philanthropy Award Honoree each year
  • Support the Women United Annual Brunch fundraiser and philanthropy goals
  • Support engagement goals including attending events, promoting Women United activities on social media, and email communications with members/prospective members before and after events
  • Serve on a short-term ad-hoc subcommittee (optional), e.g., Women in Philanthropy Award Selection Committee, Philanthropy Committee
  • Meets monthly for 1 hour as scheduled (hybrid)
  • Total annual time commitment = 20-40 hours

Sub Committees:

developing strategies, implementing plans, and delegating tasks to achieve Council goals. Each committee is headed by a Chair and Vice Chair, who are responsible for creating agendas, facilitating committee meetings, and reporting results and updates to Council. It is not a requirement for Council members to join a committee or vice versa, but many volunteers serve on both.

 Personal and Professional Development (PPD) Committee

This committee plans and implements personal and professional development programming for Women United members and supporters. Programming includes women-centered quarterly events such as Leadership Roundtables, expert panel discussions, workshops, and training.

 Responsibilities: in collaboration with United Way staff and Council,

  • Develop and implement programming to provide personal and professional development for members, prospective members, and the broader community
  • Plan and host quarterly events
  • Research and secure event speakers/mentors/panelists, sponsors, and venues with support from United Way staff
  • Support event outline and script development
  • Identify and implement strategies with Women United network to increase attendance
  • Ensure all event attendees are followed-up with
  • Meets monthly for 1 hour as scheduled (virtual)
  • Total annual time commitment = 10-20 hours

Membership and Engagement Committee

This committee creates an inclusive and welcoming environment for our current and potential members, and fosters engagement through connection and relationship building. Overall goals for this committee are to grow and retain Women United membership and develop mutually beneficial partnerships with corporate/small business partners through the Women United Employee Resource Network.

Responsibilities: in collaboration with United Way staff and Council,

  • Identify and implement strategies to retain and recruit Women United supporters (members, sponsors, corporate partners, women owned businesses
  • Host and sponsor member appreciation event (e.g., Concerts on the Square, Holiday Social)
  • In alignment with United Way of Dane County, implement a corporate engagement strategy to connect with existing and new donors. E.g.,
    • Support strategy for Women’s ERG Network
    • Develop and distribute ERG Toolkit
    • Regularly scheduled activities to engage donors
  • Meets monthly for 1 hour as scheduled (virtual)
  • Total annual time commitment = 10-20 hours
