At Heartland, we consider the chance to be involved in the lives of our patients and families both a sacred opportunity and a privilege. The love, respect and care our hospice volunteers provide is vitally important to our patients' overall well-being during challenging times.
We serve patients in a one-hour radius around Madison (Black Earth, Baraboo, Cambridge, Edgerton, and MORE) and visit them wherever they call home!
Friendly Visitors
Friendly Visitors are our companion volunteers who bring the gift of friendship to our clients. Friendly Visitors visit patients at facilities and their homes--wherever they are located--and we match volunteers to patients located nearest to them.
These volunteer-patient matches enhance quality of life through regular visits by offering support, companionship and assistance with non-medical tasks to ensure that patients spend their final days in dignity and comfort. We match volunteers with patients based on interests and location and require a visiting frequency of at LEAST one 60-minute visit per month. The commitment is rather minimal but means the entire world to a person nearing end-of-life. Hours are flexible to work with your schedule.
We require at least 6 months of commitment with a patient, frequency flexible with your schedule (at least a half-hour per month)!
Hospice volunteers say that being intimately involved with another person's death gives them a greater appreciation for life. Some say it makes them more grateful and less susceptible to getting ruffled over life's smaller hassles such as long lines and traffic jams [source: Hospice Volunteer Association].
