Volunteer: Vigil VolunteersAt Heartland, we consider the chance to be involved in the lives of our patients and families both a sacred opportunity and a privilege. The love, respect and care our hospice volunteers provide is vitally important to our patients' overall well-being during challenging times. Vigil Volunteers The role of the Vigil Volunteer is to be with patients in their last hours of living who would otherwise be alone. While they do not assist with direct patient care or transport family members, they provide support to the family and comfort to the patient at the patient’s bedside. This position is set for an "as needed" basis as patients turn to their final hours. Emails and/or calls go out to our Vigil Volunteers about sign-up times in collaboration with the health care team. Volunteers can simply let us know they are unavailable at that time without repercussion. Hospice volunteers say that being intimately involved with another person's death gives them a greater appreciation for life. Some say it makes them more grateful and less susceptible to getting ruffled over life's smaller hassles such as long lines and traffic jams [source: Hospice Volunteer Association]. Help us identify children with potential vision problems and set them on the road to healthy vision through children's vision screenings in your community. Founded in 1958 by a group of dedicated volunteers, Prevent Blindness Wisconsin's mission is to prevent blindness and preserve sight in Wisconsin communities. The children’s vision screening certification is good for 3 years. No previous experience with health care or vision screenings is necessary. This is an opportunity for individual adults, teens and small groups (maximum size of 5). Volunteers are required to complete and pass a background check and Children’s Vision Screener Training before volunteering. Consider joining us for a volunteer workday in the restored prairies, savannas and woodlands at Holy Wisdom Monastery to sustain your spirit and the land. Activities shift seasonally, with common projects including invasive species removal and seed collecting.
2024 Dates: Wisdom Prairie Workdays are every Wednesday throughout the year from 9:00-11:30 am. Meet at the kiosk at the top of the monastery building parking lot and come for as long as you can.
Time: 9:00 am - 11:30 am
Location: We meet at the kiosk at the top of the monastery's hill. GPS Coordinates: 43°07'18.9"N 89°27'05.9"W
Please register by emailing Amy Alstad, aalstad@holywisdommonastery.org.
What if none of the volunteer opportunities align with my schedule?
Consider coming for a walk on the trails whenever your availability permits. We could always use your help monitoring trail conditions!
Goals for our trail monitoring program include:
· Early detection of trail issues · Collecting data on number of trail users · Diversifying opportunities for volunteers Protocol for trail monitoring is simple: Walk a section – or two or all – of the Holy Wisdom trails and report what you encounter using a simple online form. For now, this is a purely a monitoring program. In other words, no need to engage with trail users e.g. about dogs or other infractions. Volunteer: Craft Supplies for Girl Scout ProgramsGirl Scouts of Wisconsin Badgerland Council has a mission to build up girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. We provide K-12 programming in the areas of STEM, the outdoors, life skills and entrepreneurship. At many of our events, it's Girl Scout tradition to exchange "SWAPs" which stands for: Small or Special whatcha-ma-call-its Affectionally Pinned Somewhere. SWAPs are a small symbol of friendship that Girl Scouts proudly display on their sash or vest. They can be a momento of a trip taken together as a troop, a memory of a time they tried something outside their comfort zone or just a way to say thank you for being a sister to every Girl Scout. We are currently in need of SWAP making supplies to get us through the year! We thank you for your contribution to Girl Scouts in Dane County!

Volunteer on your time!
Consider coming for a walk on the trails whenever your availability permits. We could always use your help monitoring trail conditions!
Goals for our trail monitoring program include:

Volunteer: Volunteer DriverThe Dane Sanctuary Coalition has provided rides for many immigrants to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices in Milwaukee, Waukegan, IL, and Chicago, as well as the United States Immigration Court in Chicago since 2019. While there are 54 individuals currently on the email distribution list, some of the persons on the email distribution list have never volunteered because they don't want to drive in Chicago (well, no one does), some persons can't be away from home/Dane County for a full day, some persons are snowbirds, etc. There have been a couple of times in which no one has volunteered to take an individual or a family to their scheduled appointment. So, we are always seeking additional volunteer drivers. The scheduled appointments typically are for: Collection of biometrics, which includes a photograph, fingerprinting, and completion of a form providing identifying information (e.g., color of eyes). Security checks. Generally, the security checks are done annually. For recently arrived immigrants, they may have an appointment to remove an ankle monitor once the immigrants have a permanent address. Asylum interviews. Court hearings to determine if the immigrant/family will be given a deportation order. Citizenship interviews. Meetings with an immigration attorney to prepare for an asylum interview or immigration court hearing. There have been a few rides for medical appointments for which our transportation was essential, as well as a couple of rides to consulates in Chicago to obtain identification papers. The rides to Milwaukee or Waukegan and back generally are completed within six to eight hours. The rides to Chicago and back are full day + events. Dane Sanctuary Coalition is able to provide a $25 reimbursement for rides to Milwaukee or Waukegan and a $65 plus parking reimbursement for rides to Chicago. When one of the referring agencies have an immigrant/family who has an immigrant/family who have a scheduled appointment with USCIS or Immigration Court, Dan Zimmerman or Dineen Grow, the co-coordinators for the volunteer driver program, sends out an email to the distribution list seeking a volunteer driver for the specific ride. Volunteer drivers only commit to a specific ride based on their availability. For persons interested in volunteering – A virtual training session will provide further explanation about the role and responsibilities of a volunteer driver, USCIS processes, etc. If you are interested in being a volunteer driver and the training, please send Dan Zimmerman an email message at zimmerman_dan@hotmail.com or call him at his home at 608-241-1158.
