Volunteer: Volunteer Driver

The Dane Sanctuary Coalition has provided rides for many immigrants to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices in Milwaukee, Waukegan, IL, and Chicago, as well as the United States Immigration Court in Chicago since 2019. While there are 54 individuals currently on the email distribution list, some of the persons on the email distribution list have never volunteered because they don't want to drive in Chicago (well, no one does), some persons can't be away from home/Dane County for a full day, some persons are snowbirds, etc.  There have been a couple of times in which no one has volunteered to take an individual or a family to their scheduled appointment.  So, we are always seeking additional volunteer drivers.

The scheduled appointments typically are for:

Collection of biometrics, which includes a photograph, fingerprinting, and completion of a form providing identifying information (e.g., color of eyes). Security checks. Generally, the security checks are done annually.  For recently arrived immigrants, they may have an appointment to remove an ankle monitor once the immigrants have a permanent address. Asylum interviews. Court hearings to determine if the immigrant/family will be given a deportation order. Citizenship interviews. Meetings with an immigration attorney to prepare for an asylum interview or immigration court hearing.

There have been a few rides for medical appointments for which our transportation was essential, as well as a couple of rides to consulates in Chicago to obtain identification papers.

The rides to Milwaukee or Waukegan and back generally are completed within six to eight hours.  The rides to Chicago and back are full day + events.  Dane Sanctuary Coalition is able to provide a $25 reimbursement for rides to Milwaukee or Waukegan and a $65 plus parking reimbursement for rides to Chicago.

When one of the referring agencies have an immigrant/family who has an immigrant/family who have a scheduled appointment with USCIS or Immigration Court, Dan Zimmerman or Dineen Grow, the co-coordinators for the volunteer driver program, sends out an email to the distribution list seeking a volunteer driver for the specific ride.  Volunteer drivers only commit to a specific ride based on their availability.

For persons interested in volunteering – A virtual training session will provide further explanation about the role and responsibilities of a volunteer driver, USCIS processes, etc.  If you are interested in being a volunteer driver and the training, please send Dan Zimmerman an email message at zimmerman_dan@hotmail.com or call him at his home at 608-241-1158.

Volunteer: Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)

Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) provide a voice in the court for a child involved with the child welfare system for a case of abuse, neglect, or other situation impacting the child’s safety, permanency, or well-being. This is a crucial role for some of Dane and Columbia Counties' most vulnerable children.

CASAs are appointed by and act as the eyes and ears for the juvenile court judge. Advocates make weekly visits to their assigned child (either in the parental home, foster home, residential treatment facility, at school, or in the community), as well as correspond with caregivers, teachers, and other service providers to get a complete picture of the child’s history and current circumstances. CASAs, with the support of CASA staff, provide written reports to judges and parties to the case, helping them to make more informed decisions that ensure the child reaches a safe and permanent home as soon as possible. CASAs also work cooperatively with social workers, attorneys, and other professionals involved in the case to recommend and coordinate services that support the best interests of the child.

If you're interested in this rewarding volunteer opportunity, please respond to this post and fill out a volunteer application: https://wi-dane.evintosolutions.com/VolunteerApplication.

Please note that while everyone is invited to apply, this is an in-demand volunteer position, meaning we are unable to take on all applicants as CASAs. Due to the program's strong volunteer retention rate and the interest of new volunteers outweighing the case demand, applicants should expect to wait a year or more before they are able to receive training. As we are able, we will send out updates regarding training sessions to applicants.

Duties and Activities

Weekly meetings with an assigned child, as well as ongoing communication with family members and other professionals involved in their case. Review and monitor documents and records related to the case, including checking that case plans and court orders are being followed. Advocate for the child’s best interests to the court and raise concerns about the child’s health, education, mental health, etc. with the appropriate professionals. Keep the court informed by providing written reports for court hearings, appearing in court when necessary, and updating the court on developments with agencies and family members. Work cooperatively with individuals and organizations involved in the child’s life to ensure that the child and their family are receiving appropriate services. As one volunteer said: Be the glue that connects the pieces in a complicated child welfare system.

Time Commitment

Minimum 12 month commitment. A minimum of 1 weekly (1-2 hour) visit with the assigned child. Estimated 8-12 hours monthly to prepare weekly status updates, monthly court reports, and communicate with other professionals involved in the case.

Qualifications: General

Be at least 21 years old with high school diploma or G.E.D. Complete a Volunteer Application, clear a background check, and attend a volunteer interview. Attend trainings specific to the volunteer position. Ability to work with a diverse population. Ability to maintain confidentiality and objectivity. Access to reliable transportation. Warm, friendly demeanor and positive attitude.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

Computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office. Excellent organizational skills. Personal and/or professional experience with child protective agencies, foster care, juvenile court, or other child service agencies. Bilingual volunteers strongly encouraged to apply.

Position Benefits

Direct experience for those interested in counseling, social work, law, and other related fields. Learn about issues facing children and families with special needs. Develop communication and report-writing skills.

If you have any questions or concerns about the position, please feel free to contact volunteercoordinator@canopycenter.org for more information.

Best practices for volunteering while avoiding COVID-19 exposure, provided by United Way of Dane County

Rely on updates and instructions from the Center for Disease Control. Volunteering at sites: Volunteers who arrive at a site should wear face masks to avoid possibly exposing the community members at the site as well as from possibly exposing themselves while volunteering at the site. Most sites will provide these or relevant instructions to volunteers. Ask for these in advance of arrival. Those volunteers who are showing signs of physical illness should not volunteer.  Those who were recently in contact with people showing signs of illness should not volunteer. Volunteers should know the exact roles and responsibilities expected by the site and the health and safety policies of the site. Read the volunteer need description clearly to understand your specific tasks. Volunteering remotely: Volunteers should know the exact roles and responsibilities expected by the site. Read the volunteer need description clearly to understand your specific tasks. Volunteer sites are fielding many emails and phone calls right now. Once you get started on tasks, make sure that you know the best way to communicate with the volunteer manager at the site to give you feedback on your progress as a volunteer. Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) provide a voice in the court for a child involved with the Dane County child welfare system for a case of abuse, neglect, or other situation impacting the child's safety, permanency, or well-being. This is a crucial role for some of Dane County's most vulnerable children!

CASAs are appointed by and act as the eyes and ears for the juvenile court judge. Advocates make weekly visits to their assigned child (either in their parental home, foster home, residential treatment facility, at school or in the community), as well as correspond with caregivers, teachers and other service providers to get a complete picture of the child's history and current circumstances. CASAs, with the support of Dane County CASA staff, provide written reports to judges and parties to the case, helping them to make more informed decisions that ensure the child reaches a safe and permanent home as soon as possible. CASAs also work cooperatively with social workers, attorneys and other professionals involved in the case to recommend and coordinate services that support the best interests of the child.

QUALIFICATIONS: There are no professional or education requirements to be a CASA in Dane County, but we do require that advocates be at least 21 years of age to serve on a case and commit to serve a minimum of 1 year with our program. Advocates must be willing to serve approximately 2 hours per week, and up to 10-15 hours per month.

TRAINING: Advocates are required to complete an initial training that covers topics such as the court system child protective services, strength-based approaches, diversity, and cultural sensitivity. The training format is a combination of "in-class" time and "home study", for an estimated total of 30 hours. The in-class portion usually takes place in two-hour sessions (5:30 - 7:30 pm), one evening per week for a stretch of six weeks.

Apply at https://canopycenter.org/volunteeremployee.html

Please note that while everyone is invited to apply, this is an in-demand volunteer position, meaning we are unable to take on all applicants as CASAs. Due to Dane County CASA's strong volunteer retention rate and the interest of new volunteers outweighing the case demand, applicants should expect to wait a year or more before they are able to receive training. As we are able, we will send out updates regarding training sessions to applicants.

Volunteer: Lead our future leaders! Virtual Trooping with Girl Scouts

We are looking for volunteers who are looking to make a difference and support girls in their leadership development journey!

As a virtual troop leader, you’ll introduce girls to new experiences that show them they’re capable of more than they ever imagined, especially with an online world.

Girl Scout volunteers are imaginative, committed and dynamic! They will be leading the next gen Go-Getters, Innovators, Risk-Takers and Leaders. Virtual troops will meet 1-4 times per month. The schedule is flexible and will accommodate volunteers and troops. Meeting times vary between 30-60 minutes and take place online via Zoom. Meetings and activities are "girl-led" - that means leaders get to learn what interests their girls have and guide them to accomplish their goals!

Virtual troop leaders can serve in teams as well. Gather 2-3 friends and become a troop leader cohort. Council will support all new volunteers with training, ideas and resources, such as Zoom, meeting guides and scheduled virtual programming.

Our Girl Scouts around Badgerland are ready to explore. Come share your talents, skills and expertise - join our movement to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make an impact in our world!

Volunteer: Shelter Relief Worker

The morning volunteers are often the first interaction a client has each morning.  As folks wake up in the shelter and prepare to start their day, it can be filled with a lot of stress and apprehension.  A warm smile and light conversation as food and coffee are served can set an individual on the right track to leave the shelter motivated to take the steps necessary to move towards self-sufficiency.

Join our team of volunteers sharing their compassion and encouragement with families and individuals as they start their day.

Hours of Operation: Tuesday or Wednesday 6:30 am to 8:00 am

Volunteers are asked to complete a volunteer application, background check, and Safe from Harm training prior to starting with The Salvation Army.

Volunteer: Senior Medicare Patrol - Help Educate Medicare Beneficiaries in WI

The SMP program offers volunteers an opportunity to make an important difference in their communities throughout Wisconsin.

Thank you for your interest in the Senior Medicare Patrol volunteer program. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in the overall success of the Wisconsin SMP. The information that you will impart as a volunteer will help seniors in your community to become better health care consumers. Together we can inform and empower Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers on how to protect, detect, and report Medicare fraud, abuses and errors. By volunteering, you will have an opportunity to use your talents, skills, and networking to provide outreach and education on Medicare fraud in your community. Volunteer involvement ranges from distributing materials, staffing a booth at conferences and outreach events, to giving group presentations. A description of these three activities is below.

Information distributor: As a distributor, you help to transport and distribute SMP information materials to various sites, kiosks, or senior centers throughout your community where information resources are made available to residences. In this role, you do not need to engage in discussions with others about personal information or situations. However, you simply note all questions or comments and give them to the Volunteer Coordinator for follow-up. Exhibitor: As an exhibitor, you help to staff an informational table or booth at community events such as senior resources fairs, wellness expos, health workshops, conferences, civic or faith-based organizations, food pantries, libraries, or non-profit agencies. In this role, you provide information about the program to the attendees and answer basic questions related to how to prevent, detect and report Medicare fraud, abuse and errors. Presenter: As a presenter, you give presentations about the fundamentals of SMP to small and large groups. The role includes the opportunity for you to interact with the audience. If time allows, additional interaction will occur through Q & A and discussion at the end of the presentation. The presentations vary in length from 15 to 60 minutes. Depending on the time allotment and the audience, the presentations may involve a PowerPoint presentation, or an engagement activity called The FUNdamentals of Patrolling Health Care.

All positions require some training and an orientation. Training is provided both in-person and online. We want to provide you with the information and background you’ll need to be knowledgeable and capable of responding to questions from members of the community. The last two roles also require a background check.
