Opportunities From: United Way of Dane County

Volunteer: Friends Book Store Clerk

Are you looking for an opportunity to get downtown to the library, meet other book lovers, serve the community, and help raise money for even better library services and programs? If this opportunity fits your needs or interests, the Friends of the Madison Public Library (FMPL) invite you to volunteer as a sales clerk in the Friends Book Store. The Friends Book Store is located on the first floor of the Central Library and sells donated books and other materials to raise money for enhanced library services and programs for the entire Madison community. The store can only be open when volunteers are available, so if you can help, your assistance would be welcome and valued.

Volunteers sales clerks, serving one, two, or three hour shifts on a weekly or regular basis are the key to the success of the store. This opportunity might be ideal for a retired person or someone who works from home or in a part-time job to get out to meet new people and serve the community in a low-key, low stress job. It would also be a great opportunity to get experience serving the public, providing good customer service, and gaining work skills.

PREFERENCES: Ideally a book store clerk would have some experience serving the public, interacting successfully with customers, handling money, making change, operating a cash register, and working without direct supervision. But interest, enthusiasm, reliability, love of books and the library, willingness and ability to learn, and ability to work independently are the basic requirements. Volunteer sales clerks must be able to get to the downtown library to work and will be asked to establish a regular schedule. A supervisor will be available to provide training, to set up work schedules and answer questions.
