Volunteer: Volunteer Online as a Conversation PartnerReady to change a life from the comfort of home? Join ENGin as a conversation partner and be matched with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one-on-one English conversations. In just one hour a week, you can help someone build confidence, break the language barrier, and feel supported, all while discovering a new culture and making a genuine human connection. We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll facilitate English practice for your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection. Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us. Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 30,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships. We're incredibly proud of these results, and we can't wait to welcome you into this global community of volunteers making them possible. Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience. "I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up." “Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it. My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!” "This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!" Ready to Get Started? Volunteer: Help Write About Actual or Wanted Transit in the Madison AreaWriting about transit contributes to the democratic process by informing our electorate if what a 1-to-5 investment can do for the public good. Maybe you ride the bus. Maybe you do not. You can explain why, why not or something else. Do you walk, bike and/or drive a car? Why or why not? You can write about actual or anticipated experiences. Does weather matter? Does time of year matter? What would be ideal? Why? You could write a nonproprietary column or blog for our website (www.busadvocates.org/blog.html). Volunteer: Beyond Coal to clean energy volunteerEspecially with so many data center proposals, many utilities want to build new gas power plants, and continue our reliance on fossil fuels. This could result in significant escalation in energy demand, and major hikes in utility bills. Our clean energy goals could also be in serious trouble. We're also fighting for energy justice. Many people are already burdened by unaffordable energy bills as utilities continue to jack up rates. We're working to get the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to stop permitting fossil fuels and provide affordable bills and programs. If you want to fight utility greed and stop fossil fuels and new gas infrastructure, join our Beyond Coal to Clean Energy team and help us provide a clean energy future with renewable energy solutions. We meet the third Wednesday of each month at 6 pm online. There are many ways to get involved and this is a great opportunity to learn from and interact with trained staff and other volunteers, and a fun way to connect with like-minded people who are working for a better and more sustainable future. For more info, contact Don Ferber at d_ferber@sbcglobal.net.

Volunteer: Recycling Away from Home (RAH) at FestivalsTired of trash and waste and want to help us do better? Our Four Lakes Sierra Club Recycling Away from Home (RAH) program is working to create a community culture of less waste. We're at several east side Madison festivals where we help with the trash and recycling to limit landfill trash and maximize recycling, which are also opportunities to bring more attention to our trashy habits. You also get to enjoy fun festivals with the great music, vendors, food and drink. And you'll receive a genuine Four Lakes t-shirt for volunteering. This summer, we'll be at Atwoodfest on July 26 & 27, and Africafest on August 16. We'd love to have you join us, so please contact us to get involved. We also have a longer term goal to enact stronger community standards and reduce waste, and we hope to hold some more discussions with the City of Madison to figure out how to reduce use of wasteful items. If you're interested reducing waste or have ideas of your own to share, we'd love to hear from you. Nonprofit: Sierra Club Wisconsin Chapter Tired of trash and waste and want to help us do better? Volunteer: Newsletter writer/editor/layoutOur Sierra Club Four Lakes Group produces a newsletter 3 times a year, we have a blog on our web site that can be contributed to on an ongoing basis, and we do a monthly Enews. We'd welcome your joining us if you have skills or interests in writing, editing, graphics or social media to help communicate our environmental activities and issues. Our newsletter comes out in early January, May and September each year. We collaborate as a group, but are flexible on content, and include information on our campaigns, activities and volunteers. Access to a computer is required, but you can work from wherever with whatever software you have. We sometimes need to create information sheets or flyers about some of our campaign work or other activities, so there are intermittent opportunities to help with other communication. Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) provide a voice in the court for a child involved with the Dane County child welfare system for a case of abuse, neglect, or other situation impacting the child's safety, permanency, or well-being. This is a crucial role for some of Dane County's most vulnerable children! CASAs are appointed by and act as the eyes and ears for the juvenile court judge. Advocates make weekly visits to their assigned child (either in their parental home, foster home, residential treatment facility, at school or in the community), as well as correspond with caregivers, teachers and other service providers to get a complete picture of the child's history and current circumstances. CASAs, with the support of Dane County CASA staff, provide written reports to judges and parties to the case, helping them to make more informed decisions that ensure the child reaches a safe and permanent home as soon as possible. CASAs also work cooperatively with social workers, attorneys and other professionals involved in the case to recommend and coordinate services that support the best interests of the child. QUALIFICATIONS: There are no professional or education requirements to be a CASA in Dane County, but we do require that advocates be at least 21 years of age to serve on a case and commit to serve a minimum of 1 year with our program. Advocates must be willing to serve approximately 2 hours per week, and up to 10-15 hours per month. TRAINING: Advocates are required to complete an initial training that covers topics such as the court system child protective services, strength-based approaches, diversity, and cultural sensitivity. The training format is a combination of "in-class" time and "home study", for an estimated total of 30 hours. The in-class portion usually takes place in two-hour sessions (5:30 - 7:30 pm), one evening per week for a stretch of six weeks.
Apply at https://canopycenter.org/volunteeremployee.html
Please note that while everyone is invited to apply, this is an in-demand volunteer position, meaning we are unable to take on all applicants as CASAs. Due to Dane County CASA's strong volunteer retention rate and the interest of new volunteers outweighing the case demand, applicants should expect to wait a year or more before they are able to receive training. As we are able, we will send out updates regarding training sessions to applicants.
