United Way of Dane County - Achievement Connections

Who We Are

About Achievement Connections

Achievement Connections is a partnership between United Way of Dane County, the Madison Metropolitan School District, the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District and the UW-Madison Morgridge Center for Public Service. Together, we mobilize the community to support student achievement in algebra and geometry, by:

  • Training and placing math tutors in these local school districts. Even if math’s not your strongest subject, we give you the tools and knowledge you need to succeed.
  • Pairing students with a tutor for at least an entire semester, if not an entire year.
  • Supporting AmeriCorps members with a team of volunteers and school staff, empowering them to work together and wrap around the content and the methods they’re using in class.

What We Do

Achievement Connections tutoring provides students with individualized tutoring and mentoring in order to improve student academic performance in high school and readiness for college and career. The program is aimed at high school students in algebra or geometry that would benefit from extended learning opportunities.

Our goal is to increase the number of students passing algebra by 10th grade with a grade "C" or higher.

We are looking for caring and dedicated tutors that can commit to at least two hours of tutoring a week (1 hour, twice per week) for one semester or more to students enrolled in the program and are proficient in algebra and geometry. Tutoring sessions model good study habits by being focused and paced to students' needs. The sessions may focus on only class work and/or basic skills development. All tutors will receive a comprehensive tutoring manual and on-going support and guidance from the volunteer coordinator.
