Cultural Linguistic Services, Office Of Human Resources

Who We Are

Cultural Linguistic Services is a unit with the Office of Human Resources that provides one-on-one tutors and other language services to employees who are English Language Learners (ELL). The employees include limited English speaking employees and visiting scholars.

What We Do

We match tutors with employees based on the tutor availability and areas they are comfortable tutoring.

As one-on-one tutor, you will help a UW-Madison employee improve English language, reading, writing, math, or computer skills so he or she can pursue success in the workplace and community. You may be matched with a visiting scholar who wants to improve conversational English, grammar, pronunciation, and understanding of U.S. culture. The weekly tutoring can be in person on or near campus, or virtually over Zoom. We ask for a minimum commitment of 1 hour per week for 1 semester.

Tutors can access free, online tutor training through ProLiteracy.  You can choose the English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutor Training or the Basic Literacy Tutor Training, and receive a certificate of completion for each completed training module.

We are looking for someone who is patient and enjoys helping others learn.
