At Heartland, we consider the chance to be involved in the lives of our patients and families both a sacred opportunity and a privilege. The love, respect and care our hospice volunteers provide is vitally important to our patients' overall well-being during challenging times.

Vigil Volunteers
The role of the Vigil Volunteer is to be with patients in their last hours of living who would otherwise be alone. While they do not assist with direct patient care or transport family members, they provide support to the family and comfort to the patient at the patient’s bedside.
This position is set for an "as needed" basis as patients turn to their final hours. Emails and/or calls go out to our Vigil Volunteers about sign-up times in collaboration with the health care team. Volunteers can simply let us know they are unavailable at that time without repercussion.
We require at least 6 months of commitment with a patient, frequency flexible with your schedule!
Hospice volunteers say that being intimately involved with another person's death gives them a greater appreciation for life. Some say it makes them more grateful and less susceptible to getting ruffled over life's smaller hassles such as long lines and traffic jams [source: Hospice Volunteer Association].
